68th UN General Assembly declared 2016 the International Year
of Pulses (IYP).
The IYP 2016 aims to heighten public awareness of the nutritional
benefits of pulses as part of sustainable food production
aimed towards food security and nutrition.
Pulse crops such as lentils, beans, peas and
chickpeas are a critical part of the general food basket.
Pulses are a vital source of plant-based proteins and amino
acids for people around the globe and should be eaten as part
of a healthy diet to address obesity, as well as to prevent
and help manage chronic diseases such as diabetes, coronary
conditions and cancer; they are also an important source of
plant-based protein for animals.
Sprouting is the practice of germinating seeds to be eaten
either raw or cooked. Sprouts can be purchased in most grocery
and health food stores or can easily be grown at home.
Sprouting is about a lifestyle change for people who are
looking for a non-pharmaceutical path to improved health and
wellness. An easy way to get all your essential vitamins and
minerals in a natural and organic way.

I feel I have to let you know that there is a huge difference
in the quality of sprouts from your beans to those I

Never, ever will I buy beans elsewhere. I am so happy

Sprouts represent the embryo stage of a plant. They contain all
the nutrients, vitamins and minerals needed to grow into a strong
and healthy plant. At the sprout stage, a plant is at its highest
nutritional value. A sprout can contain up to 400% more protein
than lettuce and 3900% more beta-carotine.
"Until man duplicates a blade of grass, nature can
laugh at his so-called scientific knowledge. Remedies from chemicals
will never stand in favor compared with the products of nature,
the living cell of the plant, the final result of the rays of the
sun, the mother of all life."

The abundant enzymes in sprouts make them easily digestible. One
of the most alkalizing foods known, sprouts provide nutrients that
are easily assimilated into our bodies.
Studies have also shown that Mung and other
types of sprouts contain exceptionally high levels of a natural
cancer fighting compound called sulforaphane (20 – 50 times
more than in mature broccoli) which helps support antioxidants
such as vitamin C and vitamin E.

easier way to rinse them. His design uses a shallow

Start Sprouting ... Improve
Health and Wellness
By: Cathy Nesbitt
Is your diet lacking in essential
vitamins and nutrients? Is your food causing you
to be sick and tired?
Did you know sprouts are considered
nature’s super food? There are many reasons
to eat them daily. Sprouts contain most vitamins,
fibre and protein. They are hydrating, alkalizing,
biogenic, and regenerative. In addition to all
these healthful reasons to add
sprouts to your life, they also contain loads
of digestive enzymes. Enzymes help our body process
the food we eat. The older we get, the tougher
it is for our body to produce enzymes. There are
up to 100 times more digestive enzymes in raw
sprouts than in raw vegetables.
Did you know that cooking destroys
enzymes in sprouts and vegetables? If enzymes
are not in the food we eat, our body will utilize
enzyme reserves from our body to digest. To slow
the aging process, it is essential that we increase
our intake of digestive enzymes. This is easily
achievable by consuming raw sprouts every day.
If enzyme activity gets too low, disease may result.
Doctors will often prescribe enzyme pills for
individuals experiencing digestive issues. Rather
than feed the pharmaceutical companies, why not
eat live food? Raw sprouts maintain a healthy
body with abundant natural enzymes.
Is there really a global food shortage?
Some sources claim that we are in eminent danger
of running out of food unless we embrace the practice
of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to produce
more abundant crops. Others suggest organic is
the way to go and if we stop harming the soil
with chemical fertilizers, our farms will produce
more food naturally. The truth is that there is
actually more than enough food to feed the world.
The problem is getting nutrient rich food to where
it is most needed. The availability of healthy
food is becoming critical not only in the poorer
regions of the world but also right here within
developed nations. It will come as no surprise
to many people that processed food available at
the grocery stores these days lacks the nutritional
value of food most of us grew up eating.
Hunger was once measured by the amount
of calories consumed. Most people get enough calories,
more than enough in many places where obesity
rates have risen. However, calories do not necessarily
take into account nutrient content in food.
Most beans are appropriate for the Super Simple Sprouter
since they are larger and will fit on top of the stainless
steel mesh. The beans we recommend and use most often are:
Mung, Garbanzo(chickpea), Adzuki, Lentils and Soy
Most seeds can be sprouted, however some sprouts should not
be eaten raw. Some of the most common food sprouts include:
Pulses (legumes; pea family):
alfalfa, clover, fenugreek, lentil, pea, chickpea,
mung bean and soybean (bean sprouts), adzuki.
Other vegetables and herbs:
spinach, lettuce, milk thistle, lemon grass
Along with Mung beans, these
are a few of the beans we prefer and recommend for use
with the Super Simple Sprouter:

Tony Hornick Sprout Grower
Tony Hornick, the designer and inventor of the Super Simple
After suffering a back injury in 1964 Tony was told that
he would need an operation on his spine. Looking for an alternative
to this frightening prospect, Tony took a serious look into
the areas of nutrition and fitness.
After consultations with the Chiropractic College Tony was
given massive dose of nutrients that helped detox his body.
Not only did this relieve the back pain it also gave him a
new passion about the benefits of vitamins and nutrients.
During his studies Tony discovered that sprouts had the highest
concentration of nutrients of any food available. Like a human
have all the vitamins and nutrients they need to grow into
Starting with the basic bottle-to-bottle method Tony started
to grow his own sprouts. He soon moved on to a "very
expensive" glass sprout grower. "It worked much
better but was still difficult to grow plants in my kitchen
in a simple way without getting mold."
So many great inventions start with the proclamation: "There
must be a better way", and this case is no different.
After testing a number of different methods Tony came up with
a simple sieve design that would keep the sprouts out
of the water and would be easy to clean. The Tony Hornick
Sprouter was born.
These days Tony has two passions. 1. Health: sharing with
as many people as possible the benefits of sprouts and sprouting.
2. Fitness: Tony is an ardent Ballroom dancer. Frequenting
many dance clubs in Ontario and Florida, at 84 Tony may have
a hard time finding partners that can keep up with him, but
with his regime of Sprouts and Exercise we know he will be
going for years to come.
"The sprouter is such an easy and fun
way to enhance our food and our health! My young daughter
and I thoroughly enjoy the process of watching them
come alive and grow. The best part of course, eating
them! They taste wonderful on their own as a quick snack
and added to a variety of dishes. Thank you Cathy for
making this available to more people."
"Hi Cathy! My beans are sprouting!!!
I'm like a kid, running in to see if they are growing
... and they are ... I will probably be eating them
tomorrow morning ... can't wait.
As you know the skin is our largest organ and the purer
the foods you ingest, the healthier your inner organs
are and your skin reflects this."
